About Us

Since taking effect in 2015, Initiative 71 has provided DC residents with a way to receive marijuana outside the federal limitations currently in place. Along with the gifting of weed, came intuitive entrepreneurs who set up brick and mortar shops to provide residents with safe access to cannabis. These gifting shops are now a staple in the District; serving thousands of customers a week, employing hundreds of Black people, and reinvesting in their communities. As much as we love our jobs, there are people in DC who think we, and our shops, should just disappear. "Young, Gifting, and Black" is our effort to tell the story of the people behind the gifting shops. The workers who have seen their lives change since taking these jobs, the customers who feel welcomed every time they walk through our doors, the Black entrepreneurs who provide opportunities not usually afforded to Black people. Across the nation, we have watched as Black entrepreneurs are pushed out of the regulated cannabis market to make room for wealthy white investors. DC is in a unique spot to have the most equitable cannabis market in the nation - but only if Council is willing to fight with us.
